Maria Parra For Allen County Treasurer
Maria Parra is a Fort Wayne native who attended Elmhurst High School and received a Bachelors of Science in Business from Florida State University. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington where she received an MBA with a specialty in Management Information System. While living on the east coast after her graduate study she worked for such companies as IBM, C.S. First Boston, QVC in Philadephia, PA and New York, NY as a Information Technology Professional. She relocated back to her hometown of Fort Wayne during the mid-90s to be near her family and helped her father in his Mexican restaurant called Parra's. While in Fort Wayne, Maria also worked as independent contractor in the technology field for such companies as Computerland, Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.
During her employement at Blue Cross Blue Shield, she developed a keen interest in the healthcare field and decided to try her hand as an Insurance Agent. She felt her technical background of overseeing an insurance claims processing system would benefit her insurance clients and healthcare providers. It was during this period that Maria observed the hardships seniors, families and individuals experienced in securing healthcare and felt something needed to be done to highlight the "gaps" of the private insurance system in the U.S. today. She joined the Allen County Democratic Party in 2003 in hopes of getting candidates interested in this issue and make it part of their platform. When no one would run as a candidate for the 3rd District Congressional Seat, she launched herself as a candidate late in the campaign process and was unsuccessful for her bid in 2004. Maria continues to work for families and individual without healthcare by promoting Universal Healthcare throughout Indiana with her People's March rallies and membership in Hoosiers for a Common Sense Health Plan and Michael Moore's Healthcare NOW organization of New York City.
Maria ran for Wayne Township Advisory Board Member in 2006 and was successful in being elected. The Journal Gazette's Tracy Warner cited her as a hero for coming back after her 2004 unsucessful bid for Congress and winning her office on the Wayne Township Advisory Board. Maria continues to serve the residents of Allen County through her participation on such boards and commission as the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission, United Hispanic Americans Inc., Little River Wetland Project. She has been a member of the Allen County Democratic Executive Committee since 2003 which serves as a steering committee for the Allen County Democratic Party.
Maria feels her professional background in technology can be put to good use of developing cost/benefit analysis of streamlining operations at the Allen County Treasurer's Office without incurring the expense of costly consultants which results in inflated operational budgets and hurts the pockets of taxpayers in Allen County.
