Respect

Reading this web site can be good - even helpful, but doing so will not make change happen.
Only you can do that.

Obama's Campaign for Change has developed a strategy -- a very aggressive strategy -- that will only work if our millions of supporters continue to contribute their time and their money. That strategy will work, and it has to. The stakes are too high and the need for change too great. But victory is only possible with your continued help and it can't be done without you.

Great New Stuff: Barack is the "new black" By Average White Male Obamican

I thought long and hard about writing this post. I knew that the unthinking amongst us -- both white and black -- would call me all kinds of nasty names: racist, bigot, Republican. I decided ultimately I don't care because the era of race baiting ends on January 20, 2009.

A strong, intelligent, inspirational African-American man will take the oath of office and ascend to the rank of "Leader of the Free World."

I'm voting for Obama, not because of his skin color and certainly not because I agree with most of his positions. No, I'm voting for him because I believe he's an inspirational figure who transcends politics like a Kennedy, or yes, a Reagan. A man who through sheer intelligence and leadership will propel this country to a better day. - - READ IT ALL

Clinton and Obama rally together in Unity, New Hampshire

On Friday, June 27, Hillary Clinton joined Barack Obama at a rally - their first public event since she pulled out of the race to be the Democratic presidential candidate in an opportunity for party supporters to come together after the divisive primary battle.

Mrs Clinton urged supporters at the Democrat rally to vote for Mr Obama. "If you think we need a new course, a new agenda, then vote for Barack Obama and you will get the change you need," she told the cheering crowd. "He will work for you, he will fight for you and he will stand up for you every day in the White House."

After her speech, Mr Obama joined the crowd in chanting "thank you Hillary". As well as the name, it is also the town whose Democrats were evenly split - 107 voted for Obama, 107 for Clinton.

Al Gore's Endorsement of Barack Obama

Al Gore announced his endorsement of Barack Obama Monday and promised to help the Democrat achieve what eluded him - the presidency:

"I present to you the next president of the United States, Barack Obama!" Gore said in a brief introduction of Obama at a Detroit fundraiser. He planned a later appearance with Obama at a 20,000-person rally at the Joe Louis Arena.

In a letter to be e-mailed to Obama supporters, the former vice president and Nobel Prize winner wrote, "From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected president of the United States."

Obama and Clinton meet, discuss uniting Democrats

By BETH FOUHY and NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters — the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York — switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

Obama appoints team to help find running mate

Barack Obama named a three-person team including Caroline Kennedy to lead his search for a running mate Wednesday while expressing confidence that the Democratic Party would soon unify. "I'm very confident of how we're going to be able to bring the party together," Obama said after a brief conversation with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Campaign officials said Kennedy, who is the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, as well as former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and longtime Washington insider Jim Johnson have already begun compiling information on potential running mates.

While Clinton has yet to concede defeat, she and associates have been maneuvering for the past 24 hours to gain her a place on the ticket. Bob Johnson, the founder of the Black Entertainment Network, was among them, and said he was doing so with her blessing.

The disclosure about the three-person veep vetting team was an unambiguous signal that Obama is turning his full attention to the general election campaign.

Kennedy's name came as a surprise, although she endorsed Obama at a critical time in the campaign last winter, saying he could be an inspirational leader like her father. She also campaigned for Obama.

Holder is a former federal prosecutor and District of Columbia Superior Court judge who held the No. 2 job at the Justice Department under President Clinton.

Johnson is widely known among Democrats for having helped previous candidates, including John Kerry four years ago, sift through vice presidential possibilities. He is a former chief executive officer for the mortgage lender Fannie Mae.

People generally take up arms and fight only if they have strong reasons to do so.
If you want to deal with them successfully, you must first find out what their problems are.
It is only until you deal with those problems that you can expect them to lay down their arms.
To fight them does nothing to solve the basic problems - and it is always much more expensive.

Edwards gives long-awaited endorsement to Obama

By CHUCK BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Democrat John Edwards endorsed former rival Barack Obama on Wednesday, a move designed to help solidify support for the party's likely presidential nominee even as Hillary Rodham Clinton refuses to give up her long-shot candidacy.

Edwards made a surprise appearance with Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., as the Illinois senator campaigns in a critical general election battleground state.

The endorsement came a day after Clinton defeated Obama by more than 2-to-1 in the West Virginia primary. The loss highlighted Obama's challenge in winning over the "Hillary Democrats" — white, working-class voters who also supported Edwards in significant numbers before he exited the race in late January.

Edwards, who received a thunderous ovation when Obama introduced him to a crowd of several thousand, said, "brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats" to defeat McCain. "We are here tonight because the Democratic voters have made their choice, and so have I."

He said Obama "stands with me" in a fight to cut poverty in half within 10 years.Edwards Obama

Edwards also praised Clinton, saying "we are a stronger party" because of her involvement, and "we're going to have a stronger nominee in the fall because of her work."

He said Clinton is a "woman who is made of steel. She is a leader in this country not because of her husband but because of what she has done."

Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a statement, "We respect John Edwards, but as the voters of West Virginia showed last night, this thing is far from over."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and the 2004 vice presidential nominee, finished second to Obama in the Iowa caucus in early January before coming in third in the following three contests. He dropped out in New Orleans, the location a reminder of his attention to poverty.

Both Obama and Clinton immediately asked Edwards for his endorsement, but he stayed mum for more than four months. His endorsement would have carried far more clout if he had made it in February, when the Obama-Clinton outcome was very much in doubt.

A person close to Edwards, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he wanted to get involved now to begin unifying the party. Obama also signed on to Edwards' anti-poverty initiative, which he launched Tuesday with the goal of reducing poverty in the United States by half within 10 years.

When he made his decision, Edwards didn't even tell many of his former top advisers because he wanted to inform Clinton personally, said the person close to him. Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, who has said she thinks Clinton has the superior health care plan, did not travel with him to Michigan and is not part of the endorsement.

David "Mudcat" Saunders, a chief adviser for Edwards on rural affairs during his presidential campaign, said the endorsement should take some sting out of Obama's resounding loss in West Virginia.

"For Barack Obama, I think he ought to kiss Johnny Edwards on the lips to kill this 41-point loss," Saunders said.

Edwards waged a scrappy underdog campaign for the Democratic nomination, always outshone by the historic nature of Obama possibly being the first black nominee and Clinton the first woman. He continued to campaign after the family disclosed that Elizabeth's breast cancer had returned.

Obama has 1,887 delegates, leaving him 139 delegates short of the 2,026 needed to clinch the nomination. Clinton has 1,718 delegates, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press.

Edwards has 19 pledged delegates won in three states: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Most of the those delegates have already been selected, meaning they are technically free to support whomever they choose at the party's national convention, regardless of Edwards' endorsement.

Associated Press writers Nedra Pickler and Stephen Ohlemacher in Washington and Gary D. Robertson in Raleigh, N.C., contributed to this report

Barack Obama Wins Allen County

With 294 of 294 precincts reporting in Allen County, Barack Obama has 56% of the vote as compared to 44% for Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton Wins Indiana by less than 2%

. . With a much smaller margin than expected, at 09:30 Wednesday morning, Indiana (with 5215 of 5230 precincts counted) - gave Obama 49.1% and Clinton 50.9%

Talking to poll workers, there was an extremely high amount of crossover votes from Republicans voting for Democrats. We do not know what effect that had on the percentages because different people did it for different reasons, but we suspect some were meant to hurt Obama and and others were by woman to support another Hillary Clinton.

Jill Long Thompson Narrowly Wins
The Democratic Vote For Governor

In the end, Long Thompson won by a fraction of one-percent of the vote over Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger.

======

In 2004, there were a total of 8,657 votes cast in the Democratic primary in Allen County. The GOP posted 21,649 votes.

This year, the GOP posted 20,122 (1,527 less than in 2004). However, the Democratic vote increased by 53,877 to a whopping 62,534.
