Thomas Essex is a best pick
for one of Fort Wayne City Council's three at-large seats
This web page is to share information about Thomas Essex Jr. so that you will have a better understanding of what great potential he has to make Fort Wayne a better city. First of all, Thomas Essex was endorsed by the Journal Gazette in the Sunday, October 21 newspaper for one of the Fort Wayne City Council's three at-large seats. Secondly, Mr. Essex has a lot of positive things going for him and while many people know and appreciate his vision and what he has done for Fort Wayne, there are others who are not aware of his great concern and potential. This is their chance to learn.
photo from the Fort Wayne Journal-GazetteThomas Essex Jr., an attorney with his own practice, has been interested and involved in Fort Wayne for a long time. He was the Wayne Township trustee from 1991 to 1998, and helped restore credibility to an office damaged by the criminal convictions of a previous trustee. He was the Democratic mayoral nominee in 1995, losing to Republican Paul Helmke.
Essex has supported many of the efforts of Mayor Richard and believes the city is moving in the right direction and sees the entire community benefiting from the positive direction the city’s going. He had earlier indicated he would not support changes in the smoking law. But now he says he would allow bars and clubs closed to people under 21 to create separate non-smoking areas for a limited time.
Tom Essex believes that the public would be better represented by having more council members because the council’s districts are too big. Each council district is now larger than many cities that have nine council members. That would seem to offer citizens better representation and a greater diversity of ideas.
Essex wants to focus on economic development and job creation while working on improving the relationship with the private sector to address its needs so businesses can grow and create more opportunites. Essex hopes to work closely with the police department to ensure that crime rates fall and would explore merging several city and county departments that currently duplicate services.
