Roger Clayton was appointed in April of 2007 to succeed Tom Lewandowskia as Third District Councilman in New Haven. He has served well and continues to represent the third district of New Haven. His learning curve has been very fast and Roger can work with everyone as he brings hometown values to city council.
Roger is a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 305. Having worked as a union construction electrician for over 35 years and served in union offices as a Treasurer, Executive Board member, and apprenticeship committee. He is a United States Air Force Veteran and belongs to the American Legion Post 330 in New Haven Indiana. He believes in God and Country, in a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation and associate myself with those that value the same beliefs. Roger Clayton knows that his participation in local Government will help fill that obligation.
This is what Roger Clayton says . . . .
Serving on the New Haven City Council from April of 2007 to present has been a very eye opening and educational experience for me. Listening to residents of New Haven voice their concerns about taxes, water bills, streets, sidewalks, swimming pools, park facilities, signs, sewers, safety issues, spending tax dollars wisely, Police, Fire, city workers, and other issues, lets me know people do pay attention not only with the past, the present but the future. One example was listening to people in August praise the good job of plowing snow from streets back in February long after the cost is forgotten people remember the job was done right.
Roger is the liaison to the Park Board.
One of the big dollar issues on the current agenda is the Jury Aquatic Center, at 1720 Glencoe Blvd in New Haven. The proposal is to enhance the current area with a new pool to include swimming lanes for laps and swim team, slides, splash pad and shaded area, low diving board if allowed, locker room with privacy, lockable lockers, family or assisted changing area and ADA compliance. This proposal includes swimming lessons, water exercise, and water walking and the possibility of scuba classes, water sports including volleyball, underwater hockey and basketball. Most people I have talked to support moving ahead with the idea and keeping it in the same location as the old Jury Pool.
I believe this proposal will move Jury Pool into the 21st Century. These improvements and upgrades will help improve the quality of life in our community with teaching safety habits and skills of life savings techniques along with making memories for the children of all ages of our community. To help make the Jury Aquatic Center a success we need to continue with our comprehensive pedestrian walkways plan, which suggest adding walkways to Moeller, Hartzell, Landin, Green, Seiler and other roads in our community as necessary. These walkways will not only keep our children safe on their way to the Aquatic Center but will keep walkers, joggers and bicyclist safer regardless of their destination.
Working together we can make New Haven more attractive to new residents, retailers and industrial employers. We can make New Haven better for everyone. It is our city, so let us work together to make the most of it so that we can all live our lives in a better community.
